A little bit of humour always goes a long way!

A sense of humour helps when your relationship is heading down the long slippery slope to nowhere. Humour helps to defuse a nasty situation and create an environment where you can discuss matters in a more rational way.

Don’t however confuse some light humor with minimising your partner’s concerns. You could just come across as uncaring and not empathetic at all. What we have found works well is to concentrate on the problem at hand and not get personal with critisisms. Before you get to the point of no return, agree with your partner or spouse to use a “stop-word”. If it has a humorous context that you both find funny then so much the better.

My wife and I use the phrase “Wicker Chair” when things get heated. It reminds us of an incident when I was being a pompous ass and sat down in a restaurant chair. Being on the large side at 6′2″ and over 250 pounds means that most chairs will give a little when I sit down. This wicker chair gave a little more than most. The feet slid apart and over the edge of the patio. I topled over onto the pavement and bounced across in front of some tourists and into the gutter. Did I mention that the chair was a little snug as well?

Anyway, my ego deflated and I have been ragged ever since about the little incident. In retrospect it’s quite funny and we laugh about it now. It’s become our little way of letting me know that I’ve stepped over the line in an argument and I need to back off.

We are secure enough in our relationship to be able to discuss things and work them out. If that doesn’t work and we get to the stage of not talking or being really mad at each other we use another phrase to get through it. We both like a cup of tea so either of us will ask the other whether they want a cup of tea. It’s our way of saying, OK, let’s put this behind us and move on.

Well, I hope that helps and you find some way to use what I’ve written to help your relationship over a rough patch. For some more ways to help your relationship, check out our free report “Your Relationship Guide”.
